i-DE Brings ECLIPSE Closer to Its Smart Grids Community

Connecting ECLIPSE with ongoing Smart Grids activities

How can project developments be brought closer to the teams that will contribute to their testing and validation?

On 30 October, the Flexibility team at i-DE presented the latest developments of the ECLIPSE project during “Smart Grids: What’s Going On?”, a regular internal session organised by i-DE’s Smart Grids department. The online session brought together around 90 employees and provided an opportunity to share the project’s progress, introduce the Spanish demonstrator and discuss its next steps.

From ECLIPSE progress to the Spanish demonstrator

The session introduced the overall context and current status of ECLIPSE DIGITAL, positioning the project within the Smart Grids activities being developed at i-DE.

Building on the discussions and insights from the ECLIPSE General Assembly in Lisbon, the Flexibility team presented the progress of the project’s demonstrators and highlighted representative pilot sites linked to the different use-case categories and High-Level Use Cases (HLUCs).

Particular attention was given to the Spanish demonstrator, which will be deployed at Iberdrola’s Training Campus facilities. The presentation covered its scope, the use cases being implemented, its current development status and the next steps towards deployment and testing.

Exploring how flexibility works in practice

The discussion generated strong interest among attendees, particularly around the practical implementation of flexibility use cases within the Spanish demonstrator.

Several questions focused on the interaction between the DSO and the commercial side, including what information is exchanged, which infrastructure supports this exchange and how these interactions can be monitored in near real time.

These questions highlighted the value of the demonstrator as a practical testbed for exploring and clarifying the technical and operational aspects of flexibility services before moving towards field validation.

Preparing for future testing

Beyond presenting the project’s progress, the session helped raise awareness of Iberdrola’s involvement in ECLIPSE across the organisation and prepare employees for their potential participation in future testing activities at the Training Campus.

By bringing the Spanish demonstrator directly to the Smart Grids teams, the workshop strengthened internal engagement and created a common understanding of the pilot’s objectives, implementation and upcoming activities.

The session also demonstrated how ECLIPSE pilot developments can be integrated into ongoing Smart Grids activities, creating opportunities to exchange knowledge and gather valuable feedback ahead of real-world validation.
