Growth of Digitisation in Electricity Grids
The European Commission has intensified its focus on digital technologies such as smart meters and consumption management platforms. In the second half of 2024, guidelines were published to encourage the use of these tools, designed to empower consumers and reduce energy consumption. These platforms allow users to optimise their consumption based on dynamic pricing and real-time recommendations, contributing to a more stable and efficient grid.
The European Commission’s Vision for a Smarter Energy Network
In line with this, the European Commission recently published the State of the Energy Union 2024 Report, highlighting significant progress in securing affordable, clean, and reliable energy for all EU citizens.
Key achievements include:
- a substantial reduction in dependence on Russian gas (from 45% in 2021 to 18% by mid-2024),
- a decrease in electricity and gas prices since their 2022 peak,
- and the generation of 50% of EU electricity from renewable sources in early 2024. Wind energy has now overtaken gas as the second-largest source of electricity after nuclear
ECLIPSE Project: Pioneering Energy Efficiency and Grid Stability
This progress aligns with the goals of our ECLIPSE Project, which aim to enhance energy efficiency and empower consumers to make informed choices. By leveraging digital tools, ECLIPSE contributes to the EU’s broader mission of transitioning towards a climate-neutral future and stabilizing energy grids through innovations like smart EV charging and load shifting.
