Shaping Energy Markets: ECLIPSE at the 3rd Flexibility Services Conference

The ECLIPSE Project proudly took part in the 3rd Conference “Flexibility services – the new role of DSOs in the energy market” held on November 27-28, 2024, in Warsaw, Poland. Organized by the Polish Power Transmission and Distribution Association (PTPiREE), this event brought together nearly 160 participants, including high-level representatives from Poland’s Ministry of Climate and Environment and the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO).

Exploring the Growing Role of Flexibility in Energy

The conference reaffirmed the increasing importance of flexibility in the energy sector. Through research, pilot projects, and hands-on experiences, it was evident that flexibility services are becoming an integral part of modern energy systems.

During a dynamic panel discussion moderated by Katarzyna Zalewska-Wojtuś (PTPiREE) alongside panelists such as Małgorzata Kozak (URE), Ewa Mataczyńska (PGE Dystrybucja), and Maciej Mróz (TAURON Dystrybucja SA), several key topics were addressed, including:

  • The needs of DSOs and planned regulatory guidelines.
  • Strategies for managing electricity systems using available resources.
  • The necessity of identifying local needs and resources, ensuring service profitability, and promoting educational initiatives for energy transition.

ECLIPSE’s presentation, held by TAURON Dystrybucja S.A., emphasized the role of energy storage and energy clusters as critical sources of flexibility. Discussions highlighted how physical energy storage owned by prosumers, or “flexumers,” could become valuable resources when aggregated.

Insights from Across the Energy Landscape

Mieczysław Wrocławski, Vice President of the Polish Energy Storage Association (PESA), expanded on the topic of aggregating flexibility services using energy storage and its integration with energy markets.

The conference also shed light on the perspectives of flexibility service providers, including energy storage, energy communities, district heating networks, and end-users. Case studies from the UK, Italy, and Portugal demonstrated practical applications of trading platforms and other innovations.

Conclusion and Insights

The event provided a unique forum for dialogue between regulators, DSOs, and the energy market. Attendees exchanged valuable insights and discussed strategies for advancing energy transition. For more details, visit the event’s webpage or read the official press release here.

ECLIPSE remains committed to driving innovation in the energy sector, fostering collaboration, and promoting a sustainable energy future. Stay tuned for more updates!
