ETRA: Leading Innovation in Europe’s Digital Energy Transition
As a leading European technology company, ETRA has long been at the forefront of smart energy innovation. Headquartered in Spain, the group’s mission is to apply cutting-edge technologies to address the challenges of smart cities, energy, mobility, transport, and security. With decades of experience in European R&D projects, ETRA has established itself as a key player in shaping the continent’s energy digitalisation.
From research to real-world transformation
In the context of Europe’s energy transition, ETRA’s work focuses on the digitalisation and optimisation of the energy system, developing advanced tools that support renewable integration, smart grid management, and demand-side flexibility. The company’s approach blends artificial intelligence, data analytics, and interoperability to create solutions that make energy systems more efficient, resilient, and consumer-focused.
Through projects such as ECLIPSE DIGITAL, SYNERGY, ODEON, and OPENTUNITY, ETRA continues to demonstrate its capacity to connect research outcomes with large-scale implementation, a bridge between innovation and practical deployment.
A key role in ECLIPSE: coordination and technical leadership
Within the ECLIPSE DIGITAL project, ETRA plays a dual role as project coordinator and technology provider. This central position allows the company to steer the technical and strategic direction of the consortium, ensuring coherence across all work packages and pilots.
ETRA cooperates in the development and deployment of the Common European Reference Framework (CERF), a new open-source structure that enables interoperability between consumer energy applications and the wider energy ecosystem. The CERF provides a common foundation for integrating diverse tools, platforms, and services, fostering collaboration across the European energy landscape.
Building the ECLIPSE user application

One of ETRA’s most visible contributions to ECLIPSE is the design and development of the ECLIPSE end-user energy application. This app is
being created as both a demonstrator and a functional tool that connects consumers directly to the CERF, allowing them to monitor, understand, and optimise their energy usage in real time.
The application features an intuitive interface that combines real-time monitoring, personalised recommendations, and flexibility participation options, empowering users to make informed energy choices while contributing to grid stability. The app is currently being tested in 13 pilot sites across 17 EU countries.
The foundation: analysing Europe’s energy applications
Before development began, ETRA led a comprehensive study titled “Analysis of existing energy monitoring applications and services in the market and of the legal framework.” This research reviewed more than 20 existing energy apps and platforms across Europe, analysing their functionalities, usability, and user adoption levels.
The study identified both best practices and common limitations, providing valuable insights into how European consumers interact with digital energy tools, and what barriers still prevent wider adoption. These findings became a cornerstone for the design of the ECLIPSE CERF and user app, ensuring it directly addresses real user needs and market gaps.
Bridging innovation, interoperability, and consumer empowerment
ETRA’s work in ECLIPSE extends beyond app development. The company also contributes to defining data interoperability standards and to aligning the project’s architecture with emerging European Energy Data Space initiatives. By integrating AI-based forecasting, IoT connectivity, and secure data exchange, ETRA is helping build a more open, interoperable, and consumer-driven energy ecosystem.
Through its participation, ETRA reinforces its broader mission: enabling citizens and organisations to take an active role in the energy transition, not just as consumers, but as key contributors to flexibility and sustainability.
Looking ahead
As ECLIPSE moves into its second year, ETRA continues to drive progress through new prototypes, validation activities, and collaboration with the project’s pilots and partners. The lessons learned from the app’s testing phase and the CERF’s development will serve as building blocks for a more standardised and integrated energy digitalisation across Europe.
Stay tuned to see how ETRA and ECLIPSE are shaping the future of smart energy, turning innovation into tangible impact for consumers, companies, and the planet.
