Heatwaves, Record Prices, and the Cooling Crisis: How ECLIPSE DIGITAL Empowers Citizens During Summer

This summer, Europe is facing an unprecedented challenge. According to recent reports from The Guardian, extreme heatwaves are driving electricity prices to multi-year highs as millions of citizens turn to air conditioning to battle record temperatures. At the same time, the power system is under immense strain: low wind speeds have reduced renewable generation, and high river temperatures are making it difficult to cool nuclear reactors in countries like France. In this context, European consumers find themselves trapped between soaring bills and a grid under extreme pressure.

From Passive Consumer to “Flexibility Hero”

The ECLIPSE DIGITAL project was born to change this dynamic. Our mission is to implement the Common European Reference Framework (CERF), a technical blueprint that enables the creation of mobile applications capable of transforming every citizen into an active partner of the electricity grid. Instead of receiving a surprise bill at the end of the month, ECLIPSE DIGITAL provides the tools to take action in real-time.

How ECLIPSE DIGITAL Helps During a Heatwave

  1. Real-Time Visibility (NRT): While most current apps only show past usage, the ECLIPSE DIGITAL framework is designed to provide near real-time measurements (in intervals of 1 to 15 minutes). By utilizing technologies such as NILM (Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring), users can identify exactly how much their air conditioning is consuming and receive personalized tips to optimize its use.
  2. Alerts for Extreme Grid Situations: Several of our 56 co-created Use Cases are designed specifically for climate crises. For instance, apps compliant with the framework can send emergency response alerts directly to a user’s smartphone when a heatwave threatens grid stability, suggesting voluntary load reductions to prevent local outages.
  3. The “Follow the Sun” Strategy: Summer is the season of peak solar production. Our Use Case RO 2.1 (“Follow the Sun”) encourages users to synchronize their most energy-intensive tasks, such as EV charging or using powerful appliances, with peaks in renewable generation, reducing both environmental impact and energy costs.
  4. Collective Resilience: In critical situations where grid operators must pay exorbitant prices to secure supply, ECLIPSE DIGITAL users can act as a “lever” of flexibility. Through demand response mechanisms, citizens can voluntarily reduce their load, helping to stabilize the European system and receiving direct savings on their bills in return.

Conclusion: A Sovereign Digital Future

The technology developed by ECLIPSE DIGITAL, validated across 13 pilot sites in 17 EU countries, proves that digital innovation is the key to a just energy transition. This summer reminds us that the power grid is a common good. Through the secure data exchange and interoperability proposed by the project, we are building an ecosystem where heat no longer means instability, but an opportunity for citizen-driven efficiency.
